1. Be customer focussed

As any business person knows, the key for a successful business is to think about your customers and provide what they actually need - not just what you think they should need.

The same is true for your website. You need to make sure that it makes sense, both graphically and navigationally to the general public. Businesses tend to use brand names, slogans and even abbrevriations that mean little or nothing to the general public.

So make sure you do your research and make sure that the thing your customer is searching for is logically placed within your website, using terms that the general public will instinctively understand.

2. Stay up to date

An out of date website is a useless website.

If you aren't able to put the time and resources into keeping your site up to date (or employ someone else to do so), make sure that when you set it up, there isn't anything that will date it prematurely.

Updating your website doesn't need to be either expensive or time consuming. Content management systems can be relatively inexpensive and make updating the site relatively quick and simple. A good content management system can also be configured to automatically show or hide content once a date or time has passed - giving the appearance of updates occuring far more regularly than they actually do.
