All websites require a domain name - and it's inevitably going to become one of the names used to refer to your business or organisation. So you want to take some time and choose carefully what you want the domain name (or URL) to be.
Here are a few tips:
- Human readable addresses are better than short lists of initials, unless your company is already known by these initials.
- Generally, shorter addresses are easier to remember and easier to type into a browser.
- Longer domain names are more likely to be available, but make sure you choose one that is easy to remember and won't be mistyped.
- Domain name costs vary but most domains cost between £7 for 2 years (e.g. .co.uk, .org.uk) up to £10.50 for one year (e.g. .com, .org). So it is not unrealistic to purchase a few domain name variants.
- Think beyond choosing a name that is simply the same as your company's. Think of what your potential customer might be typing into the search engine.
- Choose carefully what domain name extention you want to use. A .com should be used if you want to give the appearance or perception of being an international organisation. Where as, using a .co.uk might suggest that you care most about UK clients.
There are no right or wrong domain names. Just make sure that your address reflects your needs. If you would like to discuss selecting a domain name, please give me a call or e-mail and I'll happily run through ideas with you.
