Articles: Renew Early to Save Money

I'm reminded of a Baz Luhman song from the late 1990s. "Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen)", the song proudly begins as the singer (well, it's not really singing) reels of a list of advice that he's heard over his lifetime.
At one point in his song he makes the statement "Prices will rise, politicians will fallander and you too will get old. When you do, you'll fantasise that when you were younger, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders".
While I could probably make some political comments - I won't. Unfortunately this article is about prices rising.
From 26th October, the price of registering and renewing certain domain names will rise. In some cases the increase will be quite significant so we would certainly recommend either renewing early or perhaps even taking advantage of bulk ordering for a longer period of time. It is possible to renew for up to 10 years.
The price increase will affect the following domain name types:
- All .uk domains will increase from £8.50 a year to £12.00 a year.*
- .com domains increase from £13.50 per annum to £16.00 per annum.*
- .cymru domains increase from £12.00 per year to £24.00 per year (by far the biggest increase)*
- .eu domains increase from £13.00 to £14.50 a year.*
- .org web domains increase from £14.50 to £19.50 per annum.*
There are often special offers on key domain names when you register them for the initial period, so while you will no doubt be able to register a new domain for around £1 (usually plus VAT) the annual renewal will be closer to the totals above.
Now, we usually renew .UK domain names for 2 years at a time at the cost of £17. The longer you renew the domain for, the cheaper the domain usually becomes. For example, it is possible to re-register a .CO.UK domain for 9 years for £76. This equates to a cost of £8.44 per year, a saving of £3.56 per year when compared to renewing annually at the new price. Unfortunately it is not possible to renew .eu domain names more than a year at a time, but if your renewal is coming up soon we'd recommend renewing before 26th October.
We would strongly suggest that anyone that is planning to keep their domain name long term renew it sooner rather than later in order to make long term savings. If you wish to speak to us about this, please get in touch.
To paraphrase Baz Luhman again, "Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling for more than it's worth, But trust me on the..." domain names.
*As a small business, we are not VAT registered so all prices are inclusive of all valid taxes and fees.
