According to new research revealed by Communications Regulator Ofcom, people in the UK are more likely to do their shopping online than in any other major country.
In the UK, shoppers now spend an average of £1,083 a year on-line from internet retailers, beating Australia whose shoppers spend the second highest at £842.
It seems that the UK's love for net shopping is partially driven by their fondness for mobile phones and tablets.
Not only are UK consumers spending more online, a surge in smart phone usage means we are also downloading more data than any other nation. Mobile versions of Facebook, Twitter and other social networks are now used by 40% of UK residents with use among under 25s reaching a staggering 62%.
With this massive shift from PC based internet usage, the challenge for online retailers has become about making sure their websites work on the wide variety of mobile devices that are available, each with a different screen size, resolution and even operating system.
For some retailers this challenge may seem like an unrealistic one to overcome, but we are now able to offer websites that snap to size depending on the screen size, even customising the information shown depending on the size of the screen by hiding elements (like scrolling banners and some images) allowing for a better user experience.
